Death Valley trip was an impromptu Saturday morning plan. Luckily we got the accommodation in the park that morning and we set-off. This was the weekend of April 13,2013. After driving for almost 8 hours, the heat, dust, salt and wilderness of Death Valley welcomed us. Yes, we were in the wild wild west.
After having a sumptuous lunch, we drove to Rhyolite, a ghost town and reached Scotty’s castle driving through the canyons for 3 hours. From the exterior, we felt that the castle is overhyped, hence headed up for Mesquite sand dunes. We stayed at the dunes till darkness covered the surrounding. Had an early dinner and slept off. Next morning, around 4:00 AM, when the stars still lighted the sky, we drove to Dante’s Point in the furnace creek area to view the sunrise. It was an otherworldly experience.
Post sunrise, we went to Zabriskie point, Artist’s point, Devil’s golf course, Golden Canyon and Badwater basin. It was 1:00 PM by the time we were done. The temperature had soared to 98F. It was time to get back.
Carry plenty of water and sunscreen. Get up early if you want to hike in the area. The food at the salon/restaurant is very delicious.
